St_Andrews: Shinescreen (2020) - Project Promotion [English]
Current sunscreens use a combination of inorganic nanoparticles and coral-damaging UV-absorbing compounds including oxybenzone. Using Nissle E. coli as an in-silico chassis, the St Andrews team seeks to combat widespread coral decline by designing a living sunscreen expressing a potent cyanobacterial photoprotective compound, shinorine. Vital to our project is a controlling mechanism; a novel killswitch was developed using environmental stimuli to restrain growth of the chassis to the permissive condition of the skin.
