Aaron Bushnell: In Memorium

The purpose of this channel is singularly to host the last video created by Aaron Bushnell. It was, in his words, an extreme act of protest against the genocide in Gaza.

This video is graphic. It is hard to watch. It captured the self-immolation that Aaron carried out in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC.

Worklab 2023 - tribute to Aaron Swartz

Along with Edward Snowden and Julian Assange, Aaron Swartz is considered one of the most important Internet activists to date, who strongly shaped and influenced the development of the Internet in his short lifetime. As a programmer and advocate for the Open Access Movement, Net Neutrality and civic awareness, he defended the exchange of information constructively across geographic borders via the web.

Aaron Swartz was conscious about the immense meaning of the words open access, open source and net neutrality for the creative development of art, design as well as science.
10 years after his death, we want to revisit what exactly happened and where are we standing today. Who is involved in these thought processes or is that all just wishful thinking?

This program is part of the project series “aaron´s law” that includes various artistic-technical projects dedicated to Aaron Swartz and developed in close cooperation with ACOnet/net:art coordination center.

The Elephant in the Room

Hey hey, I'm Aaron, 24 years old and I make videos about our trade-based society. I'm interested in a bunch of things like how we can automate stuff to get rid of boring, stressful and dangerous jobs, I'm interested in trade-free software, the stars and the universe and nature in general. Basically how this world works, because the world we live in is more fascinating than any hollywood movie (that's why I don't watch movies, but documentaries). It's just the society we live in that is messed up.

I called this channel "The Elephant in the Room", because there's this trade "thing" that creates most of the problems we see in the world today and very few seem to be aware of it or recognize it as a problem. Trade is the Elephant in the Room! I will explain all that in my videos where I provide thousands of examples and want to raise awareness about that issue, but also make videos about solutions.

TROM Projekt

Seven on Seven

Founded in 2010, Seven on Seven (7x7) pairs artists with tech luminaries for deep conversation and day-long collaboration. Each pair is given a simple assignment: make something new.

The results–which may be an app, a prototype, a performance, an artwork–are unveiled for the first time at a public event. Many of the projects go on to further development and exhibition.

Over the years, 7x7 has given rise to notable projects and conversations:

In 2014, artist Kevin McCoy minted “the first NFT” as part of his collaboration with technologist Anil Dash.

An artwork presented by artist Taryn Simon and programmer/activist Aaron Swartz at 7x7 2012 has gone on to be exhibited around the world, and covered in publications such as the New York Times.

And on the lighter side, artist Jayson Musson and Jonah Peretti presented a satirical demo for a new social network called Blockedt! at 7x7 2017.

Stories from the New Aesthetic

Stories from the New Aesthetic took place at The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City on October 11, 2012.

The New Aesthetic is an ongoing research project by James Bridle, investigating the intersections of culture and technology, history and memory, and the physical and the digital. At a panel at South by Southwest this past March, Aaron Straup Cope, Ben Terrett, James Bridle, Joanne McNeil, and Russell Davies discussed ideas related to the project, which sparked a series of responses and ideas from artists, writers, and theorists across the web.
